The Orlando Magic have announced their game plan in how they’re going to handle the Dwight Howard situation. The Magic are going to try to acquire another player to help Orlando get better and make a push, which would also entice Howard to commit long-term to the franchise. However if such a trade or deal is not made then the Magic will listen and entertain offers of trading their star player and face of their franchise.
Could the Dallas Mavericks trade for Dwight? Possibly. Though doing so would essentially dismantle any dream of signing Deron Williams as well. Since Dwight Howard would be a Dallas Maverick, he could get an bigger contract from the organization, essentially getting too much money, which would prevent Deron from getting a max deal as well.
If Dwight is traded to the Mavs he would be eligible for a 5 year $109.2 million dollar deal in a sign and trade. Deron Williams and Dwight Howard too, coming to Dallas via free agency would only be eligible for a 4 year $81.1 million dollar deal.
Mike Fisher of dallasbasketball.com and Fox Sports says the real hurdle or “headache” as he puts it for the Dallas Mavericks is that the Magic would be looking to dump Hedo Turkoglu on whoever takes Dwight Howard. He has a salary of $11 million, and is extremely overpaid. Mike Fisher says it is the inclusion of Hedo Turkoglu that brings down all the hopes of 3D in Big D. His salary would make it impossible to sign Deron Williams.
Dallasbasketball.com outlines the 3 offers the Mavericks could make to Orlando:
The Mavs can create packages that put them arguably in the ballpark of the Chicago idea. A trio of proposals that Orlando can anticipate being asked by Dallas to discuss:
*Orlando gets Brendan Haywood, Brandan Wright (or Ian Mahinmi), Lamar Odom and Jason Terry … Dallas gets Howard, Hedo and two other throw-in fillers with small contracts.
*Orlando gets Haywood, Odom, Shawn Marion and Roddy Beaubois … Dallas gets Howard, Hedo and two small fillers.
*Orlando gets Haywood, Wright, Mahinmi, Odom, Vince Carter, Beaubois and Dominque Jones… Dallas gets Howard, Hedo and 4 bodies with minimal contracts
The Mavericks are ready to get Dwight by any means necessary, but as Mike Fisher said they aren’t ready to give up on getting Deron and Dwight and being the NBA’s best team.
As tempting as it is to get Dwight now and save this season, I think you hold steady to the course and stick to the 3D blueprint.
